LEAH LIU

Hi there,

My name is Leah Liu. As a passionate artist with a bachelor's degree in design from Ocad, I majored in Material Art and Design, specializing in Textiles and minoring in Industrial Ceramics.

This series aims to create a contrast between the flowing glaze texture and the geometric shape of the work.

Textiles

Ocean

Silk
Indigo dyed, Pleated

This work is an exploration of texture and colour. The combination originated in scenes of the ocean by the seashore. Looking at the endless pacific meets the blue sky, and the shore is full of grey and black gravel. The waves are lashing the water into white foam.

The use of indigo dye provided a rich colour combination, perfectly capturing the essence of the ocean. Furthermore, I devised the pleating texture reminiscent of the wave by adding volume to silk. It so resembles ocean scenery that I can feel and see it.

Sculpture

Untitled, 2021

Paper band, Knotting
54 x 30 x 24 inches

Stones remind me of the passage of time. A stone’s irregular form and imperfect surface show what it has undergone through time. Inspired by the wabi-sabi aesthetic that appreciates the imperfection and impermanence of things, this knotted sculpture represents stacked stones and their transient and imperfect nature. The primary material of my sculpture is paper band which is hand-knotted in a repetitive action resembling how stones are formed naturally and irregularly. My work aims to amplify the beauty I see in nature by creating a seemingly random but expressive and unconventional form.

Hand-braided and Beading Design - Jewellery Design

I am currently working as a jewellery designer and selling my work on my website. It makes me a customer-oriented designer with an eye for commercial products and jewellery. Through my previous experiences, I have shown an excellent ability to utilize different materials and pick up techniques and software quickly.
